Natural latex vs memory foam: which should you choose?

Natural latex or memory foam? We compare comfort, temperature, chemicals and price to help you choose the right mattress or mattress topper.

Comfort

  • Latex: Moulds to your body while remaining responsive and quickly returning to its original shape. Latex provides progressive support, so you do not feel as though you are sinking into it and can turn freely throughout the night. Known for maintaining a stable shape over many years.

  • Memory foam: Provides excellent targeted pressure relief, but can feel warm and enclosing, as though you are sinking into a hollow. Over time, it may also be more prone to permanent body impressions (indentations in the sleeping surface).

Temperature

  • Latex: Has a higher density, meaning it contains less air and therefore typically feels cool. The material is naturally breathable and usually perforated to improve airflow through the mattress, further contributing to its cooling effect.

  • Memory foam: Contains a high level of trapped air, which acts as insulation, and can often feel warm. The material has low natural breathability, contributing to a warmer sleeping environment.

Chemicals

  • Memory foam (PU-based): Made by reacting polyols with diisocyanates, typically MDI or TDI, and adding substances including blowing agents, catalysts and surfactants. Adhesives are also often used between the layers. When new, it may release VOCs, causing the characteristic “new mattress smell” and, in some cases, skin irritation and other reactions. There is considerable variation: quality products are tested, but unfortunately many memory foam products still contain chemical flame retardants and/or strong adhesives. Consumer exposure is typically low with quality products, but the potential for odour and off-gassing is real, particularly during the first few days or weeks.

  • Natural latex: Vulcanised natural rubber with a thoroughly rinsed core. A natural product made using a simple manufacturing process involving very few, if any, synthetic chemicals.

Moisture / Mould / Hygiene

  • Memory foam: Its dense structure, warmer microclimate and slight moisture absorption create a higher risk of moisture and mould problems.

  • Natural latex: Better airflow and hydrophobic properties mean a lower risk of moisture and mould problems. The material is also naturally antimicrobial.

Price & Industry Economics

  • Latex: A more expensive, natural raw material that is heavier and costlier to handle, so it is more commonly found in premium products.

  • Memory foam: Cheaper to produce and scale, as well as easy to compress and package due to its low weight and high air content. This makes it possible to offer affordable products and, in practice, often leaves room for healthy margins. Alongside skilful marketing, this is a key reason why the material is so widely used.

Conclusion

For many people, natural latex performs better in terms of support, temperature regulation and long-term stability. Some prefer memory foam for its “hugging” comfort, but the trade-off is typically greater heat retention, higher sensitivity to moisture and less shape stability over time, particularly at lower densities. Memory foam dominates the market largely because it makes it easy for manufacturers to create affordable products with generous margins, backed by clever marketing, not necessarily because the material is technically superior.

If you want the “hugging comfort” of memory foam, choose verified certifications, a high-density comfort layer, a breathable cover and a ventilated base to get the best version of the material.
