Family bed size guide – the perfect size for your family
Intro
At FamBed we have conducted a customer analysis among 1,000+ families to answer the most commonly asked question: “What size should we choose?” Below you will find a simple rule of thumb, specific recommendations based on family constellation – and the answer to whether length matters.
The short version
Our most popular size is the 240 × 200 cm family bed. But is it optimal for everyone? No – according to our data, 240 × 200 is particularly suited to a family with two adults and one child. Other constellations benefit from more width, but one of the reasons 240 cm is our most popular may be limited room size, as our data points to better sleep with more space.
The golden rule of thumb (from 1,000+ customer surveys)
For the most undisturbed sleep possible, our analysis shows:
- 90 cm per adult
- 60 cm per child
This is the point where the sleep satisfaction curves cross – this is where most families give top marks. In general, satisfaction increases quite linearly the more space is available.
Quick formula for width
Width ≈ 90 cm × number of adults + 60 cm × number of children Round up to the nearest 10 cm increment – we’ll take care of that for you.
Size suggestions – with recommended headroom
How to read the table: Minimum is based on the formula. Comfort means a little extra breathing room. And they can be chosen in 10 cm increments.
| Family constellation | Recommended range (width) | Typical options |
|---|---|---|
| 2 adults + 1 child | 230–260 cm | 240×200, 250×200, 260×200 |
| 2 adults + 2 children | 290–330 cm | 300×200, 310×200, 320×200 |
| 2 adults + 3 children | 350–380 cm | 360×200, 370×200, 380×200 |
| 1 adult + 2 children | 200–230 cm | 210×200, 220×200, 230×200 |
| 1 adult + 3 children | 260–300 cm | 270×200, 280×200, 300×200 |
In short: Families typically experience higher sleep quality the more space they have. If you want more breathing room, add a comfort supplement of 10–30 cm within the range.
Note: The choice naturally also depends on room size and layout – for example, whether you want bedside tables, wall shelves or extra moving space next to the bed.
Does length matter?
In our data we see no general change in sleep quality solely due to length. It mainly becomes relevant when:
- one or more people are significantly taller than average and do not like their feet hanging over the edge of the bed.
Some tall customers prefer to sleep on their stomach and let their feet stick out slightly – because they are used to it.
Rule of thumb: 200 cm suits most people; choose 210 cm if you want to ensure feet stay on the mattress.
Tips for making the right choice
- Small children often need more space than you think: They sleep sideways, rotate, etc. A little extra width often brings great calm – you can gently nudge them “over” without disturbing everyone.
- Cuddlers vs. space lovers: If you like lying close together, slightly less width is often enough. If not, more space helps noticeably.
- Factor in room & layout: Do you need bedside tables, wall shelves or extra moving space? Decide whether more floor space/bedside tables or a larger sleeping surface is most important.
- Wall-to-wall solution? A bed the width of the wall can make sense – then nobody falls out at night.
- Plan ahead: Consider whether more children will be joining the bed in the coming year – choosing slightly larger can be cheaper in the long run.
Conclusion – how to choose with confidence
- Start with the formula: 90 cm per adult + 60 cm per child.
- Round up in 10 cm increments.
- Plan a comfort supplement (+10–30 cm) if you want more space.
